This 18-year-old rock climber won the speed climbing competition with a time of 4.75 seconds, which has not been achieved in other sports. In this sport, he needs to use a lot of upper and lower body strength to reach the top, so success requires a lot of training. Although he set the record by climbing a 15-meter wall, he stated that he had a better time in training. According to CNN, he shared: «I want to win these races and stand on top of the podium… But in training, I was really running faster, and I had the idea that it was possible [to break the world record]».
Sam added: «I told myself that if I brought myself to the Olympic Games as the athlete I had become, it was very possible that I could break the world record on this stage in front of this crowd, and it really was a very cool life experience».
This year was Sam’s first at the Olympics, making his victory a historic event. Reflecting on this, he recalled his experience at the games in Paris. «I think this is probably one of my favorite life experiences», - he said about participating in the Olympics. «It's just incredible to be a member of Team USA, to see some of my childhood idols, to be in this village and meet all these people — it means a lot to me. The Olympics — an incredible experience, I really soak it all in».
As the national team called him «Speedy Sam» on social media, the fast climber shared on Instagram: «Go out there and be yourself, bring the competitive spirit that I have built with everyone in my life. Be unique, create something new, show this beautiful sport to the world»
