Prosecutors believe that Hong Kong influencer Abby Choi was dismembered by her ex-husband and his family due to a financial dispute related to the sale of a luxury apartment. Three days after Choi, 28, was reported missing on February 21, 2023, authorities discovered some of her remains in a rented house in the Tai Po area of Hong Kong. Two dismembered legs, believed to belong to Choi, were found in a refrigerator, while a pot contained a skull, ribs, and hair.
Choi’s former father-in-law, Kwon Kaoh, her ex-husband Alex Kwon, and his brother Anthony Kwon have been arrested on charges of murdering the model and socialite, and they are currently on trial in the High Court of Hong Kong. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty, according to CNN. Family members are also accused of obstructing the lawful burial of Choi’s body. Alex and Kwon have pleaded guilty to this charge, according to information from The Times.
Choi came from a wealthy family connected to the construction industry and achieved success as an influencer, boasting over 140,000 followers on Instagram at the time of her death. She regularly posted photos from fashion events and her modeling work. Prosecutors noted that after her divorce from Alex, Choi maintained a good relationship with his family. She reportedly allowed his father to live in the apartment worth $ 7.6 million and registered it in his name for tax purposes.
However, prosecutor Charlotte Draycott stated that Choi’s relationship with her former in-laws deteriorated after she attempted to sell the apartment in 2022 and move the family closer to the children’s school. Kwon initially refused to sign the documents but eventually agreed to the sale after Choi threatened legal action. The prosecution claims that Kwon and his sons devised a plan to kill Choi to retain the apartment.
The trial will resume on Friday, October 2, and is expected to last about 40 days.
