Adam Peaty tested positive for COVID-19 less than 24 hours after winning a silver medal in swimming at the Olympics in Paris, the British team announced on Monday.

The British swimming star, who missed out on gold by just 0.02 seconds, mentioned that he had been feeling a bit unwell with «a bit of a sore throat».

Although the 29-year-old athlete said he woke up feeling unwell on the day of the race, he refused to use it as an excuse.

«It's not an excuse at all, because I never want it to be an excuse. But it’s a hurdle that I had to overcome», - Peaty said.

«In the hours after the final, his symptoms worsened, and on Monday morning he was tested for COVID. At this stage, he tested positive», - the British team statement said.

«He hopes to return to competition in the relays later in the swimming program. As with any illness, the situation is managed accordingly, and all necessary measures are taken to maintain the health of the wider delegation».

Unlike the previous Games in Tokyo, there are no strict protocols regarding illness in Paris that could prevent him from competing. Organizers consider it a common illness, although the British team has simple protocols, including hand hygiene and maintaining distance from other competitors.

Peaty was attempting to win his third consecutive Olympic title in the 100 meters on Sunday, which would have meant joining Michael Phelps as the only man to win the same Olympic swimming event three times in a row.

He was in a good position in the final 25 meters, but Italian Nicolo Martinenghi unexpectedly won the gold.

«It's not sad at all», - Peaty said. «These are happy tears. If you’re willing to put yourself on the line every time, I don’t think there’s such a thing as defeat. I’m just so happy that the right person won».

«I don’t define myself by the medal. I define myself by my heart and what it made me feel and produce. It brought out the best in me»
