The Teenage Years has been named one of the scariest TV shows in British history. Now, as American Netflix subscribers have watched the four-part miniseries, viewers are wondering if Jamie Miller (played by newcomer Owen Cooper) was inspired by a real person. So, is The Teenage Years based on a true story?

Below, Hollywood Life breaks down the series and how writers Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham created the plot. (Warning: spoilers ahead for The Teenage Years)

The Teenage Years follows 13-year-old Jamie, who is arrested, and how his family’s world is turned upside down as a result. Accused of the murder of a classmate named Katie, Jamie faces the consequences of his actions, while his parents face their worst nightmare, and detectives investigate his motives.

Yes, Jamie’s crime is revealed in the first episode when he is interrogated by investigators. Although he claims to his father (played by co-creator and writer Stephen) that he did nothing wrong, the police show them surveillance footage of Jamie killing Katie. In the fourth episode, Jamie tells his father that he is changing his position from innocent to guilty.

The Teenage Years is not based on a specific real-life crime. Stephen told Netflix’s Tudum that he was inspired to work on the script when he heard about a case in Britain where a «young boy [presumably] killed a girl».

«It shocked me», - Stephen explained, adding, «I thought, 'What's going on? What’s happening in a society where a boy kills a girl? What’s the provoking incident here?' And then it happened again, and again, and again. I really wanted to shed light on this and ask, 'Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How did we get here?'»

Co-creator Jack added that he, Stephen, and director Philip Barantini were intrigued by the concept of male anger, and they began to «intensely question» who they are as men. «It's a journey I’ve never been on as a writer, and it scared and inspired me because it seemed like we had something to say», - Jack emphasized.

The final episode of The Teenage Years ends with Jamie calling his father to say he is changing his position to guilty. Stephen’s character, Eddie Miller, then reflects on how his parenting played a role in his son’s life. He and Jamie’s mother, Manda Miller (played by Christine Tremarco), discuss warning signs they noticed in Jamie, including the fact that the teenager was sitting up late at night on the computer.

The last moments of the fourth episode show Eddie crying in Jamie’s room and tucking his stuffed animal under the covers before apologizing to Jamie, fully accepting his fate.

«I'm sorry, son», - Eddie says through tears, before admitting, «I should have done better».

No, The Teenage Years ends with the fourth episode, and there are currently no reports of potential for a second season
