Air Canada customers will face flight cancellations this week due to a possible strike by the airline’s flight attendants. Employees went on strike over wages with the company after the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) announced that over 99 percent of its members voted in favor of a strike.
«To address the ongoing uncertainty in labor relations following the announcement of the CUPE strike, a CUPE lockout notice was issued today, effective August 16», - Air Canada said in a public statement on Wednesday, August 13. «We will begin implementing our phased gradual shutdown plan».
Air Canada is canceling flights due to the potential strike by flight attendants. According to multiple sources, the airline began canceling some flights on Thursday, August 14.
As the company stated, a full operational stoppage will begin on Saturday, August 16.
Air Canada employees, particularly flight attendants, are threatening to strike over wage disputes. According to a statement by the president of the Air Canada Component of CUPE, Wesley Lesosky, the union claimed that over the past nine months they have «presented reasonable, data-based wage proposals and unpaid work, all based on fairness and industry standards».
«Air Canada’s response to our proposals makes one thing clear: they are not interested in resolving these critical issues», - Lesosky added, according to CNN.
If the strike occurs, flight cancellations are likely to continue until Air Canada and the union reach an agreement on wages.
It is unclear when the potential strike by airline employees may end, as it has not officially begun. Air Canada President and CEO Michael Rousseau commented on the situation, noting that the company «regrets the impact that the work stoppage will have on our customers, stakeholders, and the communities we serve».
Rousseau explained the potential strike, describing the «behavior» of CUPE negotiators and the «disappointment» of the union.
«However, the disappointing behavior of CUPE negotiators and the union’s stated intention to begin a strike puts us in a position where our only responsible action is to provide certainty by gradually suspending Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge operations through a lockout», - Rousseau said in a statement. «As we have seen in other places in our industry with other labor disputes, unplanned or uncontrolled stoppages, such as the risk we are facing through a strike, can create chaos for travelers, which is much worse»
