Actor Austin Butler may be award-winning, but even he can’t land every highly coveted role. During a recent interview with Buzzfeed Celeb, the 32-year-old «Elvis» star revealed that he auditioned for a role in «The Hunger Games» and was rejected after the first round.
«I didn’t even think I was being considered for the role of Peeta», - Austin said in a video published by the agency on Wednesday, June 26. The role eventually went to actor Josh Hutcherson, whom Austin described as «great».
«The Hunger Games» franchise has become one of the most popular youth franchises based on the books by Suzanne Collins. Last year, the prequel film «The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes» premiered, in which a new cast tells the story of the series' villain, President Coriolanus Snow. The original role was played by the late Donald Sutherland, with a young version of the character played by Tom Blight.
Although Austin missed out on appearing in the franchise alongside other stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth, he continued to appear in numerous films and TV projects. Early in his career, Austin appeared in Disney and Nickelodeon shows, including «Hannah Montana» and «iCarly». He later starred in the film «Aliens in the Attic» and landed the lead role in the series «The Carrie Diaries».
Ultimately, Austin was chosen to star in Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded film «Once Upon a Time in Hollywood», - for which he received a Golden Globe and BAFTA award, as well as played the role of Elvis in the film «Elvis». A native of Anaheim, California, Austin also appeared in «Dune: Part Two» and «Bikeriders».
During an interview with Variety in February 2023, Austin acknowledged how difficult it can be for a budding actor to land roles.
«You hear 'no' so many times», - he explained to the agency. «And early on, someone told me something that really helped. They said, 'It's a numbers game. Prepare for 100 auditions before you get one role.'»
He also recalled that his audition for the role of Elvis with director Baz Luhrmann was a «masterclass» and not just a regular audition. «So I knew it would be a process», - Austin added. «I was able to focus on the work and not get too invested in the idea that it was my role»
