With more than 20 albums and compilations to his name, Alan Jackson is one of the most influential artists in country music. Recently, he received a lifetime achievement award at the ACM Awards ceremony. Previously, he was honored with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2022 Country Music Awards ceremony, as well as three-time winner of the CMA Entertainer of the Year Award (1995, 2002, 2003) and a two-time Grammy winner. It’s no wonder that in 2017 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

In addition to his thirty-year career, his personal life is also thriving. He is the proud husband of Denise Jackson, whom he married in 1979. This lovely couple is raising three children: daughters Mattie, Alexandra, and Dani.

As Alan ages, unfortunately, he has begun to experience the effects of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a degenerative neurological disorder. Despite the diagnosis he received many years ago and announced in 2021, Alan continues to perform as much as possible. Read on to learn about Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease and how it affects this country legend today.

Alan Jackson revealed that he has been living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease for «many years» in an interview with Jenna Bush Hager on TODAY in September 2021.

«There is no cure for it, but it’s been affecting me for many years», - he said at the time. «And it’s becoming more and more obvious. I know I stumble on stage. And now I have balance issues, even in front of the microphone, and I feel very uncomfortable». He also mentioned that the disease was passed down to him from his father.

And while he has truly begun to feel the effects of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, the singer of the hit «Don't Rock the Jukebox» stated that he has no plans to retire.

«I never wanted to do a big farewell tour, like people do, then take a year off and come back», - he explained. «I think that’s a bit much. And I’m not saying I won’t be able to perform anymore. I will try to do everything I can».

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is a degenerative neurological disorder that affects the nerves that run from the brain and spinal cord to all parts of the body, according to the CMT Research Foundation. The disease causes motor and sensory nerves to have difficulty transmitting signals to the brain, for example, if something is too hot. The disease weakens and ultimately destroys the nerves. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Fortunately, it is not fatal.

There are over 100 known genetic mutations that cause this disease. Symptoms can manifest from birth or in adolescence and young adulthood. Symptoms that the latter group may experience include difficulty grasping objects and balance issues, numbness, tingling, or cold hands and feet, curled toes, high arches. Symptoms for infants may include difficulty grasping objects, holding their head up, sitting, crawling, and walking.

Although Alan announced his diagnosis in 2021, he said he had been experiencing symptoms for «many years». It is unclear how long he has had Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

Alan Jackson rarely speaks about his personal life and has not provided updates on his condition since announcing it in 2021. In 2022, he embarked on a 16-stop tour called «Last Call: One More For The Road». He had to reschedule one show not due to complications from the disease, but because he tested positive for COVID-19, according to Billboard.

«I have always admired my heroes, like George Jones, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, and Charlie Pride, who just played as much as they wanted, as much as they could», - Alan praised in his tour announcement. «I always thought I would like to do the same, and I would like to do it as long as my health allows. I will try to do everything I can, but if I come to you, come to me».

Fortunately, Alan has his daughters and wife by his side when his condition worsens. «When I’m down, he lifts me up. When I fall, he picks me up»
