Alex Ovechkin announced his retirement from the NHL in 2027
NHL legend Alexander Ovechkin announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2026−27 season, which he shared on October 5. Ovechkin, who is 41 years old, noted that he and his family have decided that this season will be his last in the NHL. He emphasized the importance of making the announcement before the first home game to thank everyone who has supported him and his family throughout his career.

The Washington Capitals began the season with one win and one loss on the road, and their home game is scheduled for October 7 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ovechkin expressed gratitude to his teammates and fans, adding that he wants to enjoy every moment of this season.

Ovechkin was selected first overall in the 2004 NHL Draft and has spent his entire career in Washington, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018. He will retire with numerous NHL records, including the most goals in regular seasons and the most goals scored in his position.

Ovechkin’s announcement coincided with his support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has sparked public discontent in the United States. Ovechkin, who was born and raised in Russia, plans to move to Moscow after his career ends. He stated that he supports his country and hopes for peace. However, his public support for Putin, especially in the context of the war with Ukraine, has led to criticism, including from Congressman Joe Wilson and hockey legend Dominik Hasek.
