Alice D’Amato became the world champion in the final of the women’s balance beam at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. After both Simone Biles and Suni Lee fell from the beam, the US team left the podium open for other countries to earn a medal. This opened the way for Alice to win the gold. Originally from Genoa, Italy, Alice began her sports career in 2015. After participating in several national and international championships, she earned a spot on the Olympic team for the Tokyo 2020 Games, which were held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2024, Alice returned to the Olympic arena for the games in Paris.
Alice is the twin sister of Asia D’Amato, also a gymnast who competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
After winning on the balance beam in Paris, Alice became the first Italian female artistic gymnast to become an Olympic champion.
According to NBC, Alice told reporters that she couldn’t believe she had won the gold medal.
«If I had no words after winning silver in the team competition, then I definitely have no words now», - Alice said after the event. «I don’t know what to say. I can’t believe it. I didn’t even expect to win a medal on the beam, let alone gold. I will soak up all the emotions and do it for as long as I can».
After a remarkable number of mistakes and falls by other participants at the Paris Olympic Games, including Simone, Alice still took home the gold.
Discussing her path to the 2023 Paris Olympics, Alice noted that becoming a champion in all sports was not her goal.
«To be honest, I don’t think about that», - Alice said, referring to International Gymnast Online. «I know the level is very high, so it’s not something I keep in mind. The only thing I can do is work hard every day in the gym, and my only goal is to stay healthy and earn a spot on the team… Of course, we are looking for a medal in the team competition because we know we can achieve it if everything goes well. So everything else is just the icing on the cake»
