74-year-old Alan Herbert Barber is accused of murdering his 74-year-old girlfriend Barbara Susdorf, whom he allegedly shot in the head after she refused to sell their house in Florida and pay him $ 300,000. The incident occurred on October 3, when Barber called the police and confessed to the crime.
According to court documents, Barber and Susdorf lived together in a house registered in Susdorf’s name, and their relationship had deteriorated over the past two years. They often argued and expressed a mutual desire to separate. Barber claimed that he demanded compensation from Susdorf for the money he spent on the house, but she refused to either sell the property or pay him.
Before the argument escalated into tragedy, Barber asked Susdorf to give him a dollar for a tip at a restaurant. After that, they continued to argue in his truck, where Barber handed her a gun to put in her bag. During the dispute, he insisted again on selling the house and receiving the money, to which Susdorf responded that she was not going to pay him anything.
Barber claims that Susdorf hit him with a cup, after which he threatened her with the weapon. In response, she stated that she could shoot him herself. As a result, when she tried to take the gun, Barber shot her.
Barber is currently in custody, and his defense is being handled by the Hillsborough County Public Defender’s Office. The court granted the prosecution’s request for a preliminary detention of the accused. In a statement, Acting Tampa Police Chief Brett Owen said, «This man chose to end a dispute with a weapon and will now be held accountable for his decision».
