Knox was accused of Kercher’s murder when they were roommates in Perugia, Italy. Knox was found guilty in December 2009 of faking a break-in, defamation, sexual assault, and murder, and was sentenced to 26 years in prison; Sollecito was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Italian prosecutors accused Knox of slashing Kercher’s throat while Sollecito and a man named Rudy Guede were involved.

In 2011, Knox and Sollecito were acquitted of Kercher’s murder after a review of DNA evidence. During their final appeal, Knox and Sollecito were officially acquitted by an Italian court in 2015.

Knox spent four years in prison after her wrongful conviction for Kercher’s murder.
