In a powerful essay, Amanda Peet, who plays Mel in the popular Apple TV+ series «Your Friends and Neighbors», - shared that she was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer at a time when both of her parents were in hospice care. Her poignant statement, published in The New Yorker in March 2026, details her journey from diagnosis to recovery.

Learn about Amanda’s battle with cancer and her health below.

Amanda is now 54 years old. She was 53 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025.

As previously mentioned, Amanda was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer, which required «a lumpectomy and radiation therapy, rather than a double mastectomy or chemotherapy», - the actress noted in her essay in March 2026.

«On the Friday before Labor Day [2025], I went in for what I thought was a routine check-up», - Amanda explained, as she had been undergoing regular screenings every six months. «Dr. K… said she didn’t like how something looked on the ultrasound, and she wanted to do a biopsy. After the procedure, she said she would take the sample to Cedars-Sinai and hand it over to the pathology department. At that moment, I realized something was wrong».

Fortunately, the tumor that her doctor discovered was «small», - but Amanda still had to undergo an MRI to «determine the extent of the disease».

The doctor specifically told her that she was «hormone receptor positive and HER2-negative», - which means that the cancer cells in her breast do not have high levels of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) protein, which could promote cancer growth, according to Mayo Clinic data.

«You would think I had just taken ecstasy», - Amanda joked. «I was happier than I was before the diagnosis when I was just an ordinary person without cancer. But ten minutes later, I remembered that I still had to get an MRI, and I returned to my baseline fear».

Yes, Amanda mentioned in her essay that she had her «first clean scan» in mid-January 2026.

Doctors discovered a separate mass in the same breast, but fortunately, it turned out to be benign. Amanda described the painful procedure that was necessary to determine whether the mass was cancerous.

«The first injection, the anesthetic, was so agonizing that there was no way white fingers could be worse», - recalled the actress from 2012. «Then there was an injection with dye to highlight the suspicious mass, and finally, [technician] Tom slowly pressed my breast—while it was hanging in the air—against a barbaric waffle iron, whose gridded squares were numbered to identify the target area for the needle»
