Amazon has approved mass layoffs due to artificial intelligence

Amazon confirmed mass layoffs in its statement on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, citing artificial intelligence and the need for «fewer levels» in the business. The announcement came a few months after Amazon announced the requirement to return to the office for five days. However, the company’s latest statement assured that their «layoffs» are Amazon’s way to «greater strength through further reduction of bureaucracy, elimination of levels, and reallocation of resources to invest in our biggest bets and what is most important for the current and future needs of our customers».
The layoffs come immediately after a widespread outage of Amazon Web Services, which affected banks, airlines, and several online platforms earlier this month.
Approximately 14,000 jobs are being cut at Amazon, said Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon on October 28, 2025. However, Reuters reported that the actual number is higher, with around 30,000 jobs being eliminated. Sources familiar with the situation cited this information.
According to Galetti’s statement, Amazon is offering «most employees 90 days to find a new role within the company (timing may vary slightly depending on local laws), and our recruiting teams will prioritize internal candidates to help as many people as possible find new roles at Amazon».
For those who cannot find another role within the company, Galetti said that Amazon will offer «support during the transition period, including severance pay, job placement services, medical insurance, and more».
Although Amazon’s statement on layoffs does not specify which positions are being cut, earlier this year there were announcements of layoffs in several corporate areas. According to CNBC, jobs in sales, marketing, and global service organizations in the cloud services division of Amazon Web Services were eliminated. Additionally, it was reported that positions in the HR department are also being cut or at risk of being eliminated.
Galetti said that the layoffs are happening because «the world is changing fast» and «this generation of artificial intelligence is the most transformational technology we have seen since the advent of the Internet, and it allows companies to innovate much faster than ever before (in existing market segments and entirely new ones)».
She also explained that Amazon intends to be «organized more efficiently, with fewer levels and more responsibility, to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business»
