Amazon has released a statement and added a warning with the release of the finale of the fourth season of the series «The Boys», - which features scenes of political violence.
After the episode was released at midnight on July 18, Amazon Prime Video released a statement clarifying that any similarities between the plot and events in Pennsylvania, where a shooting occurred in Butler on July 13 resulting in one death and two critically injured, are purely coincidental.
«The finale of the fourth season of 'The Boys' contains scenes of fictional political violence that some viewers may find disturbing, especially considering the injuries and tragic death resulting from the assassination attempt on former President Trump», - Amazon said, referring to the shooting that occurred at a Trump rally.
The statement reads: «'The Boys' is a fictional series that was filmed in 2023, and any similarities in scenes or plotlines to these real events are purely accidental and unintentional. Amazon, Sony Pictures Television, and the producers of 'The Boys' categorically reject real violence of any kind.
Although the episode of the satirical superhero drama, previously titled «Chasing the Kill», - was written over a year ago and filmed last year, its release coincided with the days following the assassination attempt on former President — and current Republican presidential candidate — Donald Trump. The episode was renamed simply as «The Finale of the Fourth Season» and a warning «viewer discretion is advised» was added at the beginning.
Created by Eric Kripke and based on the graphic novel of the same name, «The Boys» tackles political themes that often reflect current events since the first season premiered in 2019.
Season 4 takes place in the aftermath of the presidential election of candidate Robert Singer, played by Jim Beaver, and his sinister vice-presidential candidate, super-powered agent Victoria Neuman, played by Claudia Doumit.
«When we first pitched the show, it was before the Trump election», - Kripke said in an interview with Variety on June 18, explaining the increasing political direction of «The Boys».
