Emilia Dimoldenberg, in her monologue on Saturday Night Live UK, mocked Ed Sheeran against the backdrop of a recent controversy surrounding his tour. In her performance on September 26, she mentioned that she had the honor of interviewing various celebrities, including Idris Elba and Sheeran, who appeared on her show Chicken Shop Date in 2021.
Sheeran found himself at the center of controversy after his management excluded rapper Makhailor from the tour, following his pro-Palestinian statements. Makhailor was dismissed after he shouted «Freedom for Palestine» during concerts in New Jersey. Sheeran, who later donated $ 2 million for humanitarian aid, denied reports that he personally made the decision to exclude him. Other artists scheduled to perform on his tour also left the project in solidarity with the rapper.
Sheeran returned to his tour in Philadelphia on September 19 without support from other artists and apologized for his «mistakes». He noted that criticism of his music is familiar to him, but the current situation involves more serious issues related to freedom of speech. On the same day, SNL UK mocked Sheeran, pointing out his neutrality in the conflict.
Sheeran did not comment on the show’s jokes, and his upcoming concerts in Boston, scheduled for September 25 and 26, were canceled due to bad weather conditions.
