American Murder: Gabby Petito explores the life of the late 22-year-old blogger-traveler Gabby Petito and the trip she took with her fiancé Brian Laundrie, which ended in her death. The three-part Netflix documentary series was released in February 2025 and featured Petito’s ex-boyfriend Jackson, whom she dated before meeting Laundrie. In a shocking confession, Jackson claimed that Petito had called him in the last days and supposedly said she wanted to leave Laundrie.
Petito and Laundrie embarked on a cross-country trip in the summer of 2021 in a white van she had purchased. In August, Petito was reported missing by her family, who had not heard from her or Laundrie for several days. In September, Laundrie returned home to his parents in Florida without Petito. After officials conducted a search in Wyoming, Petito’s remains were found.
Read on to learn about Jackson and what he revealed about his last alleged conversation with Petito in the Netflix documentary series.
Laundrie took his own life by shooting himself in the head. His skeletal remains were found by authorities in the Myakkahatchee Environmental Park in Florida along with a handwritten note describing his final moments.
In his letter, Laundrie confessed to killing Petito, writing that he «put an end [to Gabby’s life]» because she allegedly froze to death.
«I thought it was merciful, that it was what she wanted, but I now see all the mistakes I made», - his letter read. «I panicked, I was in shock. But from the moment I decided, by taking away her pain, I realized I couldn’t live without her [sic]».
Laundrie described Gabby as the «love of his life» and apologized to her family, writing: «I am so sorry to her family because I love them. I considered her younger brothers my best friends… I apologize to my family, this is a shock and terrible grief for them too».
«I lost our future together, every moment we could [share]», - the letter continued. «Please do not complicate my family’s life, they lost a son and daughter. The most wonderful girl in the world. Gabby, I’m sorry… I killed myself at this stream hoping that animals would tear me apart. That it might make some members of her family happy».
An autopsy determined that Petito died from «blunt force head and neck injuries, with manual strangulation».
In the Netflix documentary series «American Murder», - Petito’s ex-boyfriend was only referred to as Jackson. They had been dating for about a year before she met Laundrie.
In the documentary series, Jackson claimed that Petito contacted him in August 2021 — just a few days before her murder. This was also shortly after Petito and Laundrie were stopped by police due to a conflict, and the police separated them for one night, providing Laundrie with a motel room and leaving Petito to stay in her van.
«Hey, pretty sure I’m the last person on the planet you want to hear from», - Petito wrote to Jackson, according to the Netflix documentary series. «I would really like to talk to you. I’ll be alone until tomorrow».
Jackson told the producers of the documentary series that he and Petito talked on the phone for quite some time. He claimed that she allegedly revealed a «plan» to leave Laundrie during their trip.
«She said, 'I have a plan. I think I want to leave him. I’m going to do it. I need to figure out when to do it,'» Jackson claimed. «And that’s when I kind of thought, 'What are you talking about? What do you mean you have a plan?'… By the sound of her voice and the way she said it, I think she, kind of, wasn’t sure if he would do it or what he could do. I think she wanted to leave, but just didn’t know how to do it».
Jackson also revealed in the documentary series that Petito called him shortly before her murder. However, Jackson was unable to answer the phone
