American Marine charged with murder of woman in Japan
A 20-year-old U.S. Marine stationed in Japan has been charged with the murder of a woman he allegedly strangled in a hotel room and stole her personal belongings. Lieutenant Devin Jacob Ballard, serving with the III Marine Expeditionary Force at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, is suspected of killing 39-year-old Anna Yagi in Nagoya on October 3, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK, citing the Nagoya prosecutor’s office and additional sources.

According to NHK, Ballard allegedly strangled Yagi, a resident of Nagoya, with a phone cord and stole her backpack containing a wallet and other items after they visited the city’s entertainment district. The Japanese prosecutor’s office has charged Ballard with robbery resulting in death in connection with the alleged murder of Yagi, according to an indictment obtained by the American military newspaper Stars and Stripes.

The Nagoya prosecutor’s office claims that Ballard wrapped the phone cord around Yagi’s neck with the intent to kill her before robbing her. Ballard was arrested the following day, October 4, according to Okinawa police. During his initial questioning, he stated that he «knows nothing about this», - but later made comments that «partially hinted at his involvement», - NHK reports.

Police found Yagi unconscious and pronounced her dead in the hotel room on the morning of October 3. Investigators determined that the cause of death was strangulation. In a statement to the media, a representative of the III Marine Expeditionary Force noted that American military personnel are aware of the «seriousness of the charges and will continue to fully cooperate with Japanese authorities during the investigation».

It is unclear whether Ballard has hired a lawyer, according to current reports. Yagi’s family, in a statement through their attorney, expressed hope that he «will face what he has done and make amends for his actions». If Ballard is found guilty, he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment in Japan. The presence of American military personnel in Okinawa has come under increased scrutiny following Yagi’s death, and Okinawa Governor Genta Kojima has called for a review of the agreement regarding American military personnel in Japan. The murder has sparked protests across Okinawa and Tokyo, as well as a ban on alcohol for American servicemen in Okinawa, where a curfew has also been imposed.
