A three-year-old boy in Indiana drowned after his mother reportedly drank five 25-ounce cans of Bud Ice over two hours and lost consciousness in a chair on the porch. Amie Jo Farber has been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
According to a statement from the Evansville police, a call came in at 4:44 PM on Saturday, September 19, after the boy was found unresponsive in the pool. Arriving officers began resuscitation efforts, and the boy was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The homeowner told police that Farber, a family acquaintance, came to his house around 2:30 PM and asked for permission for her son to swim in the pool. He agreed, on the condition that Farber would watch him. The man noted that he was aware of Farber’s alcohol issues and observed that she appeared drunk when she arrived.
He reported that he sat outside with Farber while the boy swam on an inflatable float. When he returned after 10 minutes, he saw Farber «unconscious» in the chair, and the boy was nowhere to be seen—the float had flipped over in the pool. Soon after, he noticed the boy face down in the water, pulled him out, and shouted for someone to call 911 while beginning CPR.
The woman called 911 and told the dispatcher that Farber «lost consciousness from drinking». The boy was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. Police reported that Farber allegedly drank five large cans of Bud Ice during the two hours spent at the home.
Farber testified to police, claiming that she briefly jumped into the pool and then returned to the chair, where she «must have fallen asleep». She reportedly admitted her guilt, saying, «It's all my fault». Police took a blood sample from her before her arrest. Farber is currently in custody at the Vanderburgh County Jail with a bond set at $ 25,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, September 23. It is unclear whether she has entered a plea or hired an attorney since her arrest. The Evansville police did not respond to a request for comment on the case.
