Ana Barbosu holds her head high after losing the bronze medal. The 18-year-old Romanian gymnast initially held third place in the women’s gymnastics floor final, but lost to Jordyn Chiles after the 23-year-old member of the US team contested the judges' score.
«Thank you to everyone who supported me before, during, and after the competition», - Ana wrote on her Instagram Stories on Monday, August 5. She then shared a video with a comment from retired athlete Sandra Izbasa-Bianki, praising the Romanian team for their efforts.
«I hear the words of the coaches that they repeated to us almost daily in the training hall more clearly than ever», - she wrote in Romanian, which was translated into English. «'As Romanians, you must be more than perfect to leave no room for interpretation!' And here it is proved again! Girls, hold your head and back straight! Keep believing in your dreams! Go Romania!»
The medal was taken from Ana and awarded to American gymnast Jordyn Chiles.
Earlier, the complaint from the Romanian team was ignored.
Ana also called her Olympic journey a «dream come true» in a separate Instagram post.
«To perform with the most amazing partners and place 7th at the Olympics is a huge achievement!» Ana captioned her post that day. «To be in two individual finals was more than I dreamed of. Rising from 8th to 4th place in the floor final was thrilling! None of this would have been possible without the people who supported me unconditionally. Thank you so much!»
Although Ana maintains a positive attitude towards what happened, many social media users expressed outrage over the change in score. After it seemed that Ana had become the bronze medalist in the competition, Jordyn contested the difficulty score for her floor routine. After a judge review, Jordyn’s score was updated, placing her in third and dropping Ana to fourth.
Many of Ana’s fans claimed that she was robbed of the bronze medal, as some noted in the comments on her Instagram account.
«As an American, I’m sorry this happened. But to me, you are an Olympic medalist», - one commentator wrote under Ana’s latest post. «Love from Brazil, you were deceived and we will never forget that», - added another, while a third called Ana the «true holder of the bronze medal»
