Ana Barbosu received a bronze medal for her floor exercise at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. During the official ceremony held in Bucharest, Romania on Friday, August 16, the 18-year-old Olympian was presented with the medal that was recently stripped from American athlete Jordan Chiles.
Octavian Morariu, a member of the Romanian Olympic Committee, and Mihai Covaliu, the president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, awarded Ana the medal at the Olympic House.
After the ceremony, Ana said she «cannot help but think about [fellow countrywoman] Sabrina [Voinea] and Jordan right now», - according to a post on Instagram by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation. The caption was translated from Romanian to English.
«This is a difficult situation for us, with so many uncertainties and overwhelming emotions», - Ana continued. «I hope everyone understands that we did nothing wrong at the Olympics. And that the Olympic spirit is more important than any misunderstanding between authorities».
Ana’s medal ceremony took place two weeks after Jordan, 23, received a medal when her coach, Cecile Landi, filed a request with Olympic judges regarding Jordan’s score. Shortly after Ana initially took third place, judges moved Jordan to third place and Ana to fifth place. Ana left in tears, and Jordan received the bronze medal on the podium. Romania immediately fought for a score change, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled in their favor. CAS claimed that the USA filed a score change request four seconds after the one-minute deadline, but USA Gymnastics provided video evidence to refute the accusation. Nevertheless, CAS insisted on its decision, depriving Jordan of third place.
After a week-long break from social media, Jordan broke her silence in a lengthy statement she posted on Instagram on Thursday, August 15.
«During the celebration of my Olympic achievements, I heard the devastating news that my bronze medal was taken away», - the athlete wrote. «I believed in the appeal filed by USAG, which provided compelling evidence that my score complied with all rules. This appeal was unsuccessful. I have no words. This decision seems unfair and is a serious blow, not only to me, but to everyone who supported my journey».
Jordan also noted «unwanted racist attacks on social media», - calling them «wrong» and «extremely hurtful».
«I have put my heart and soul into this sport, and I am proud to represent my culture and my country», - she insisted. «I am proud to support everyone, regardless of team or country».
The two-time Olympic champion concluded her statement, promising to «do everything possible to ensure justice», - adding: «I believe that at the end of this journey, those in power will make the right decision»
