UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty stepped down from his executive position in May 2025. The company announced his successor in the same month in a press release and indicated the reason for Witty’s departure. Despite his departure, Witty likely accumulated a significant fortune over the years of his leadership.

This news came almost six months after UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was killed.

«We are grateful for Andrew’s leadership at UnitedHealth Group, especially during some of the most challenging times any company has faced», - said new UnitedHealth Group CEO Stephen J. Hemsley, according to the press release. «The board of directors and I greatly appreciated his leadership and compassion as CEO and director, and we wish him and his family all the best. … UnitedHealth Group has tremendous growth opportunities as we continue to help improve healthcare and achieve our potential — and, thus, return to our long-term growth target of 13 to 16 percent».

Learn more about Witty, his career, and the reasons for his departure from UnitedHealth Group below.

Witty served as CEO of UnitedHealth Group from 2021 to 2025. Previously, this businessman worked as CEO of the British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline from 2008 to 2017. Witty also served as Chancellor of the University of Nottingham from 2013 to 2017. In the past, he was a student at Nottingham and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

Witty left his position as CEO of the insurance company for «personal reasons», - UnitedHealth Group said in its May 2025 press release.

«Leading the people of UnitedHealth Group has been a tremendous honor as they work every day to improve healthcare, and they will continue to inspire me», - Witty said in a statement.

A year before Witty’s departure, he testified before the Senate Finance Committee regarding a cyberattack on Change Healthcare, owned by UnitedHealth Group. Witty apologized to all customers who felt that their personal health data had been compromised.

«We have been working 24/7 since the incident and have deployed all UnitedHealth Group resources in all aspects of our response and recovery efforts», - Witty said in his testimony at the time. «I want this committee and the American public to know that the people of UnitedHealth Group will not rest — I will not rest — until we fix this»
