Anna Gunn spoke out for the first time following the death of her «Breaking Bad» co-star R.J. Mitte. Mitte’s representative confirmed to People that the 34-year-old actor died by suicide on Monday.
Gunn, who played Skyler White, shared her memories of R.J. in an emotional statement to Us Weekly. She noted that she met him when he was just 14 years old and was struck by the depth and complexity of his character. Anna described him as «gentle and brave, incredibly kind and witty», - a person who, despite his rebellious nature, sought to learn and develop his skills.
Gunn also mentioned R.J.'s diagnosis—cerebral palsy—emphasizing his determination to ensure that his disability did not hinder him, but rather provided an opportunity to educate others through his authentic portrayal of Walt «Flynn» Jr. She expressed pride in having played his television mother and witnessing his growth as an actor and person throughout all the seasons.
«There are no words to express the bitterness of losing such a wonderful young man who made such an impact on this world», - she added. Gunn also noted that she would remember the quiet, personal moments they shared, filled with support, understanding, and laughter.
Bryan Cranston, who played Anna’s husband on the show, also paid tribute to R.J. on Instagram. He shared that he was in deep despair and recalled meeting him at 14 when he was cast as Walt Jr. Cranston noted that despite his diagnosis, R.J. never used it as an excuse and handled the demands of filming with great perseverance.
Cranston emphasized that R.J. became an active advocate for actors with disabilities and led a charity that helps people with disabilities. He expressed regret that all of R.J.'s promising life is now lost and added that it is especially tragic that R.J. died by suicide. Bryan also shared that they had planned to meet for lunch just a few weeks before his death and expressed his love for R.J.
Cranston concluded his message with a call to those contemplating suicide to seek support by calling 988.
