An Airbnb renter in Fort Lauderdale shot an 18-year-old man who, according to police, was attempting to commit a burglary. The incident occurred on September 24 around 6:00 PM when two armed men tried to break into the home where the renter was located.
According to police, during the confrontation, the renter shot one of the suspects, who was identified as Darion Pubyen. Pubyen fled the scene but was later found near his home and taken to Broward Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the upper body. He is currently in critical but stable condition following surgery.
The second suspect, 25-year-old Sean Thompson, was also arrested but reportedly did not sustain any injuries during the incident. Both men have been charged with attempted murder and armed burglary. Thompson was held without bail following his court appearance on September 25.
Fort Lauderdale police are treating the shooting as a case of self-defense; however, the identity of the renter has not been disclosed. It is unclear whether Pubyen or Thompson have made any statements or hired attorneys following their arrest. The police did not respond to requests for comments regarding updates in the case.
Local residents were shocked by the incident; some heard the gunshots in real-time. One witness, Arthur Butler Jr., told CBS Miami that he heard at least ten shots fired during the burglary.
