Don Lemon, journalist and former CNN anchor, was arrested by federal agents on Thursday, January 29. The 59-year-old Lemon had been actively supporting protests against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) this month, as tensions rose following the deaths of Rene Good and Alex Pretty. Since the news of Lemon’s arrest broke on January 30, many have been wondering why he was detained.

His attorney, Abbe Lowell, confirmed the arrest in a statement posted on Instagram. It read: «Don Lemon was detained by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy Awards. Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his legitimate work in Minneapolis was no different from what he has always done. The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role is to report the truth and hold those in power accountable».

Below are all the known details about Lemon’s arrest so far.

According to his attorney Lowell, Lemon was detained by federal agents on the evening of January 29 in Los Angeles.

Several sources reported that Lemon was arrested in connection with an incident earlier this month when protesters against ICE disrupted a church service in Minnesota.

«Instead of investigating the actions of federal agents who killed two peaceful protesters in Minnesota, the Trump Justice Department is wasting its time, attention, and resources on this arrest, and that is a real indictment in this case», - Lowell added in his statement regarding his client’s detention. «This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract from the multitude of crises facing this administration will not go unanswered. Don will actively and rigorously fight these charges in court».

More details to come.
