House Speaker Mike Johnson and his team were shocked after Donald Trump’s speech on March 5, 2025 in Congress. Shortly after the joint session of Congress, Hayden Haines, Johnson’s chief aide, was arrested by Capitol police in Washington for driving under the influence. The arrest quickly made headlines, as Johnson is one of the most prominent figures in the Republican Party.

Below, you will learn more about Johnson’s chief aide and what led to his arrest.

According to NBC News, Haines has been working as Johnson’s chief aide in the speaker’s office since 2023. Prior to that, he worked as Johnson’s chief aide in his personal office from 2017 to 2023.

Before becoming Johnson’s long-term trusted aide, Haines worked for former Senator David Vitter from 2009 to 2016. According to Haines' LinkedIn profile, he studied at Gonzaga University.

On March 4, 2025, Haines was arrested for driving under the influence when he hit a parked car shortly before midnight, as reported by the U.S. Capitol Police. He was released shortly after the arrest.

«The driver hit a parked vehicle last night around 23:40», - the police confirmed in a statement. «We arrived and arrested him for driving under the influence». A representative for Johnson also noted in a statement received by NBC News: «The Speaker is aware of the incident that occurred last night with his chief aide and the Capitol Police. The Speaker has known and closely collaborated with Hayden for almost ten years and trusts him to serve as chief aide throughout his time in Congress. Due to this and Hayden’s respected reputation among members and staff, the Speaker has full confidence and trust in Hayden’s ability to lead the speaker’s office».

It appears that Johnson is not planning to fire Haines because of his arrest. When asked by NBC News if he stands by Haines, Johnson replied, «Yes, I do». According to the Associated Press, Johnson discussed the situation with other journalists and noted that Haines is «trusted and respected, and he has my full confidence and trust in his ability to lead»
