The NFL season did not start perfectly for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The 30-year-old athlete was arrested right outside Hard Rock Stadium a few hours before the team’s home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fans heading to the stadium for the season opener encountered the incident and wondered if their star player would be able to participate in the game.
«It was quite unexpected on the way, man», - Hill, nicknamed «Cheetah» for being the fastest player in the NFL, shared during an interview after the game.
Below, HollywoodLife has gathered everything we know about Tyreek’s arrest.
Hill, who was originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, was handcuffed on Sunday morning, September 8th. According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington’s post on X (formerly Twitter), «Sources have told me that Tyreek Hill was cited for reckless driving following an incident with police at the stadium». Darlington provided further explanation: «After being pulled over, he got into a verbal altercation with the police. The officer decided to handcuff Hill. He was cited and released after resolving the situation».
After the arrest video began circulating online, the Miami Dolphins released a statement on X confirming both the incident and Hill’s game status. The statement read: «He has been released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and stopped to offer support. Tyreek and all other players involved in the incident safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game».
Although Hill was released by the Miami-Dade police, department director Stephanie V. Daniels stated in a release on X that there will be an «immediate review of all details related to the incident, and we are also reviewing available surveillance camera footage».
In a sideline interview with CBS Sports, which he also posted on his Instagram, Hill said, «At the end of the day, man, I got a job, and my job is to step into that stadium and be great, man».
He added in a post-game interview that he doesn’t understand why he was detained. «I wasn’t disrespectful because my mom didn’t raise me like that. I didn’t curse. Nothing like that. Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it out», - he shared.
He continued, «What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? God knows what that guy or guys would have done. I was just making sure I was doing what my uncle always told me to do in that situation: 'Just listen, put your hands on the wheel, and just listen.'»
Despite the rough start to the morning, Hill shined on the field, totaling 130 receiving yards, 7 receptions, and an 80-yard touchdown.
The Miami Dolphins won the game, scoring 20 points and defeating Jacksonville by 3 points thanks to a penalty
