In October 2025, one person was arrested on suspicion of being connected to the Palisades fire, one of the most destructive forest fires in the history of Los Angeles. This fire changed the lives of thousands of residents in the Pacific Palisades area, and several fires spread to different areas of Southern California in the first week of January 2025. Nine months after the Palisades fire was extinguished, a man named Jonathan Rinderknecht was arrested and charged with starting the initial fire.
Interim Central District Attorney Bill Essely announced that Rinderknecht was arrested on October 8, 2025.
«One person’s recklessness caused one of the most terrifying fires ever seen in Los Angeles, leading to loss of life and widespread destruction in Pacific Palisades», - Essely wrote in a statement. «While we cannot undo the losses suffered by those affected, we hope that this criminal case will bring some measure of justice to those who suffered from this terrible tragedy».
More information about Rinderknecht, his arrest, and the Palisades fire can be found below.
The Palisades fire was caused by several factors, including the destructive Santa Ana winds and embers from the Lachman fire on January 1, 2025, which was extinguished after burning eight acres. Six days later, the inferno known as the Palisades fire ravaged the region of Los Angeles County.
The arrested suspect in the Palisades fire arson is 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, a former Uber driver. Authorities claim that Rinderknecht «maliciously» set fire to the Lachman fire on January 1, 2025, in Pacific Palisades, which ultimately led to the full-blown Palisades fire less than a week later.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the Lachman fire, but did not suspect that the embers would cause a full fire in the Palisades, according to NBC News.
According to police, Rinderknecht had previously lived in Pacific Palisades. On the night he allegedly set fire to the Lachman fire, two Uber passengers he was driving said he looked «excited and angry». Rinderknecht then drove to the Skell Rock trail, where he allegedly set the fire. Sensors in the area showed flames shortly after midnight on January 1. Rinderknecht reported the fire by calling 911 and attempted to flee, but returned to follow the fire trucks to the trail.
According to Essely’s statement from October 8, there was an image of the city engulfed in flames created on ChatGPT on Rinderknecht’s digital device.
