Co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are gearing up for an adventure on the big screen. But for now, they are sharing their excitement in a new video for the musical «Wicked». In the video, the two stars discuss the plot of the Broadway show, which director Jon M. Chu describes as a story of «friendship».
The film will be an adaptation of the classic show, described by IMDb as «untold stories of the most famous (or infamous) characters of Oz, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unexpected friend, the Good Witch Glinda». The story follows Elphaba from birth to college and through pivotal events that ultimately lead to her being called «wicked», - introducing the spoiled rich girl Glinda, the local prince and heartthrob Fiyero, and even the Wizard of Oz.
The description continues: «As Elphaba, a passionate political activist, if ever there was one, fights injustice and seeks to right the wrongs of the past, dark secrets and personal tragedies shape the story of Oz, celebrating the classic tale of the Wizard of Oz, simultaneously changing fans' understanding forever».
With this plot in mind, the two stars, who will be starring alongside Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Ariana’s boyfriend Ethan Slater, and others, were able to develop their friendship both on screen and off.
During the trailer for the upcoming film, the 31-year-old singer reflected on her role as Glinda and her relationship with her roommate, Elphaba, saying: «These two very different women just completely fall in love with each other… and it reflects the experience of what happened with Cynthia and me».
The 37-year-old actress added: «We just found each other, I guess… We just understood each other right away».
When Ariana and Cynthia take on the roles of students attending Shiz University in the Land of Oz, these dreamy portrayals were highly anticipated — especially for the singer of «Problem», - who had previously expressed that «Wicked» is one of her favorite stories.
