Ashley Manning: From Women’s Ring to Charity

Peyton Manning has three rings: a Super Bowl champion ring he received with the Indianapolis Colts in 2006, a champion ring he received with the Denver Broncos after Super Bowl 50 in 2015, and a wedding ring he received when he said «I do» to Ashley Manning (formerly Thompson) in 2001. Interestingly, Peyton would not have two of these rings if he had not met Ashley.
Ashley grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, according to Heavy.com. She was introduced to Peyton by a neighbor’s parents during the summer before Peyton’s freshman year in college. An unknown neighbor played football at the University of Texas and hosted Peyton during a recruiting trip. This mysterious matchmaker thought Peyton and Ashley would be the perfect couple — and he was right.
The couple got married on March 17, 2001 — also known as St. Patrick’s Day. March was a lucky month for Peyton and Ashley, as on March 31, 2011, Ashley gave birth to twins — son Marshall Williams and daughter Mosley Thompson.
Peyton won his first Super Bowl ring in 2006, playing for the Indianapolis Colts. He remained with the team for another five years until a series of neck surgeries forced him to miss the 2011 season. After his time with the Colts, the then 37-year-old Peyton was considering retirement. «Ashley was the one who said, 'Peyton, you have to try. You have to try,'» Peyton told Sports Illustrated journalist Peter King. «When I did that, I started moving forward, and then I started to see a little light. So, yeah, she was the one who pushed me».
«And, really, I had peace about it. I had peace. Because I had an incredible run of health for 20 years — from 15 years old, when I was a sophomore in high school», - added Manning. «So who am I to complain now that I’m injured? I gave everything I could. I have kids now. I had peace about it. So I didn’t feel like I needed to play to get one more win or touchdown. But she said, 'You have to try.' So I was glad she pushed me to do that. When I did that, I started moving forward, and then I started to see a little light. So, yeah, she was the one who pushed me».
Peyton ultimately retired after securing his second NFL championship with the Colts, ending an outstanding career on the football field.
Ashley’s interests in sports are not limited to football. In 2012, she joined a group including Justin Timberlake, Penny Hardaway, and former congressman Harold Ford Jr. to become a minority owner of her hometown basketball team, the Memphis Grizzlies, according to the Denver Post.
In addition to her role as a co-owner of the Memphis Grizzlies, Ashley is involved in charity work. She is the co-founder of the PeyBack Foundation with her husband, according to Sportskeeda. PeyBack «helps underprivileged and at-risk youth in Louisiana and Indiana in the state of Tennessee». She also participates in charity events to raise funds for breast cancer research, as her mother battled the disease. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ashley collaborated with Peyton to serve over 600 meals to frontline medical staff at a hospital in Germantown, Tennessee
