The commander of the Artemis II mission, Reid Wiseman, was able to pay tribute to his late wife, Carroll Wiseman, during his space flight. The crew of the Orion spacecraft—Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—named a crater on the Moon in honor of Carroll, and this touching moment was captured for the world to see.

«We would like to name it Carroll», - mission specialist Jeremy said during their flight in April 2026. «A few years ago, we started this journey, and in our close-knit family of astronauts, we lost someone dear. Her name was Carroll. She was Reid’s wife, and the mother of Katie and Ellie. And we would like to name it Carroll».

All four astronauts embraced as Reid wiped away tears. This moment became an important milestone, affirming that science can be emotional in the best ways.

Carroll was Reid’s wife, who «dedicated her life to helping others as a nurse in a neonatal intensive care unit», - as stated on NASA’s website.

Reid and Carroll were married in 2003 and were together until her death in 2020.

Carroll passed away after battling cancer in 2020. She was 46 years old.

Reid is the father of two daughters, Katie and Ellie, whom he raises with Carroll. The astronaut has been raising Ellie and Katie alone since his wife’s death. According to NASA, Reid «considers his time as a single parent his greatest challenge and the most rewarding experience of his life».

Before heading into space as part of the Artemis II mission in April 2026, Reid shared that he prepared his daughters for the possibility of his death if the mission were to fail.

«I told them, 'Here is where the will is, here are the trust documents, and if something happens to me, this is what will happen to you,'» Reid explained. «I really wish more people in everyday life would talk to their families this way because you never know what the next day will bring»
