In October 2025, charges of bank fraud were brought against New York Attorney General Letitia James. The 66-year-old Democrat was charged on October 9th and maintains her innocence on all charges.

«This is nothing but a desperate weapon of the president of our justice», - James claimed, addressing Donald Trump. «He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to carry out his orders, all because I was doing my job as the Attorney General of the state of New York».

Calling the charges against her «baseless», - James continued, stating that «Trump's only goal is political revenge at any cost». She also claimed that the president’s actions «seriously violate our constitutional order and draw sharp criticism from representatives of both parties».

«I am proud of my faith, and I know that faith and fear cannot coexist in the same space», - James concluded. «And that is why today I do not feel fear, I am fearless, and as my faith teaches me, no weapon created against me will prosper. We will fight these baseless charges persistently, and my office will continue to vigorously defend the residents of New York and their rights. And I will continue to do my job».

James has been the current Attorney General of New York, holding the position since January 2019 after winning the elections the previous year. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, James studied social work at Lehman College of the City University of New York. She eventually earned a law degree from Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C., before being admitted to practice law at home in New York.

James served on the New York City Council from 2004 to 2013, representing the 35th district.

On October 9, 2025, Eastern District of Virginia prosecutor Lindsay Halligan announced that James had been charged with one count of bank fraud and one count of making false statements to a financial institution.

«No one is above the law», - Halligan said, referring to the official announcement of the charges. «The charges, as alleged in this case, constitute intentional, criminal actions and significant violations of public trust. The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue to follow them to ensure justice».

If James is found guilty, she faces up to 30 years in prison for each charge, a fine of up to $ 1 million for each charge, and confiscation, according to the charges. The potential sentence will be determined by the federal district court.
