On Sunday, March 22, at LaGuardia Airport in New York, an Air Canada Express plane collided with a Port Authority fire truck. The accident occurred late in the evening, shortly before midnight, resulting in the deaths of two pilots. The airline confirmed in a public statement that a Mitsubishi CRJ-900 from Jazz Aviation was involved in the incident.

«Flight AC8646, operated by Air Canada Express Jazz Aviation LP, departed from Montreal», - Air Canada stated on Monday, March 23. «The preliminary passenger list indicates that there were approximately 72 passengers and four crew members on board, although this requires confirmation. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey confirmed that the pilot and first officer were killed in the accident. We are deeply saddened by the loss of two Jazz employees, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Jazz family and their loved ones».

The accident occurred against the backdrop of serious issues at American airports due to a partial government shutdown affecting TSA employees. Some of them are not reporting to work due to lack of pay, leading to increased wait times at airports.

As of now, it is known that two pilots died as a result of the disaster at LaGuardia Airport, officials reported. At the time of publication, there were no reports of fatalities among passengers; however, dozens of people were injured. According to NBC News, 41 people were injured.

Nevertheless, Air Canada was unable to immediately confirm the exact number of injured, according to CNN.

Reports indicate that the disaster was caused by communication problems. The fire truck was reportedly cleared to cross the runway while the Air Canada Express plane was landing.

LaGuardia Airport will be closed at least until 2:00 PM Eastern Time on March 23, the Port Authority announced
