The identity of the suspect was not disclosed at the time of publication, but Merseyside Police announced that it was a 53-year-old white man who was driving the car. Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist attack.
«We believe this to be an isolated incident, and at this time we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it», - Sims said according to Reuters. «The incident is not being treated as terrorism».
It remains unclear why the suspect allegedly drove his car into the crowd.
At the time of publication, no one had died from the car ramming incident in Liverpool, but many were injured. The North West Ambulance Service stated that 27 people were hospitalized, with two sustaining injuries, including one child with serious injuries, according to The Guardian. Additionally, 20 people were treated at the scene near Water Street.
