There has never been a first couple like Barack and Michelle Obama. The 44th President of the United States and his talented wife have been together for about 32 years, with 30 of those years in marriage, celebrating their recent anniversary on October 3, 2022. After time spent as a senator from Illinois, two terms in the White House, as well as book tours and family trips, this couple has experienced much and made history along the way. Take a look at the romance of Barack and Michelle through this chronology of their relationship.
Meeting in 1989
At just 25 years old, Michelle was working as a lawyer on the South Side of Chicago when she was asked to mentor Barack. Although their relationship initially remained strictly professional, Barack eventually found the courage to ask Michelle out on a date. «When [Barack and I] started talking and became friends, he was very clear — just, 'I want to date you.' In my experience up to that point, men were subtle. They, you know, looked around the room. Everything was so complicated and seemed a little immature», - Michelle recalled on Conan O’Brien’s show.
«What struck me about Barack was his lack of pretense», - Michelle said. «I mean, he was a man who knew what he wanted and wasn’t afraid to say it. And I thought, 'well, if he’s so in tune with his emotions that he can say out loud to someone he doesn’t know, does he like me or not! He said, 'listen, let me tell you what I think about you: I think you’re special, I think you’re different, and I’d like to go on a date with you.' And that was rare. And it was attractive».
Wedding Bells in 1992
Three years after their first date on the South Side of Chicago, Michelle and Barack exchanged vows on October 3, 1992. In their nearly thirty-year marriage, the couple remembered that autumn day when they promised love to each other in front of family and friends. «You can’t tell from this photo, but Barack woke up on our wedding day in October 1992 with a terrible cold», - began the caption to the photo she posted a few months before their 26th wedding anniversary.
«Somehow, by the time I met him at the altar, it miraculously disappeared, and we danced almost all night. Twenty-five years later, we’re still having fun, continuing the hard work of building our partnership and supporting each other as individuals. I can’t imagine going on this wild ride with anyone else».
Birth of Malia in 1998
«We sit in our own pain, thinking that somehow we are broken. That’s one of the reasons I think it’s important to talk to young mothers about miscarriages. I think it’s the worst thing we do to each other as women — not share the truth about our bodies and how they work». Fortunately, after IVF treatment, Michelle and Barack welcomed daughter Malia Ann Obama on July 4, 1998. But soon, a new member joined the family of three!
Birth of Sasha in 2001
«They reflect their generation in the sense that they want to change something and think about their careers in terms of: how can I make a positive impact? How can I make the world better?» shared the former president in an interview on November 24, 2020. «The specific paths they choose for this, I think, will change and differ between them».
Senator of Illinois in 2004
Election of 2008
Re-election in 2012
«It was as if, confined within the walls of the White House, all her previous sources of irritation became more concentrated, more vivid, whether it was my round-the-clock absorption in work, or how politics subjected our family to criticism and attacks, or the tendency of even friends and family members to treat her role as secondary»
