Barack Obama endorsed Kamala Harris at the 2024 Democratic Party convention

The crowd during the second evening of the 2024 Democratic National Convention was undeniably «excited» when former President Barack Obama took the stage. After his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, introduced him, 63-year-old Obama concluded the DNC event on Tuesday, August 20, with a powerful speech in which he praised President Joe Biden and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
«It's been 16 years since I had the honor of accepting this party’s nomination for president», - Obama began, joking, «And I know it’s hard to believe, because I haven’t aged a day. But it’s true».
Reflecting on his past presidency, Obama recalled his «first major decision», - which «turned out to be one of the best», - which was «asking Joe Biden to stand by my side as vice president». Pointing out that he and 81-year-old Biden «come from different backgrounds», - Obama noted that they «became brothers» during his eight-year presidency.
«And as we worked together for eight — sometimes quite difficult — years, what I most respected about Joe was not just his intellect, his experience; it was his empathy, his decency, and his earned resilience, his unshakable belief that everyone in this country deserves a fair shot», - Obama explained. «And over the past four years, these values were needed most in America».
During Obama’s time in the White House, he and Joe became favorites of the public because of their friendship and different rhetoric. Now, as Joe has declined to run for re-election, Obama noted that history «will remember Joe Biden as an outstanding president who defended democracy in a moment of great danger».
«And I am proud to call him my president, but I am even prouder to call him my friend», - said the former senator from Illinois, pointing to a «new chapter» for America in his speech. «America is ready for a better story. We are ready for President Kamala Harris. And Kamala Harris is ready to work. This is a person who has spent her life fighting for those who need a voice and a defender».
In his closing remarks, Obama motivated the crowd to «get to work», - helping Kamala, 59, and her vice presidential candidate, Tim Walz, win the 2024 election.
«And I believe that if each of us does our part in the next 77 days — if we knock on doors, make phone calls, talk to friends, listen to neighbors, work like never before, stick to our beliefs — we will elect Kamala Harris as the next President of the United States, and Tim Walz as the next Vice President of the United States», - he concluded
