The film «Beetlejuice» is a return of several original characters — except for two. During a new interview, director Tim Burton revealed the reason why Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis did not return to their roles in the sequel.
«For me, it was important not just to tick boxes», - — said Tim, 66, to PEOPLE in an interview published on Wednesday, August 28. «So, although they were an amazingly important part of the first film, I focused on something else».
The director continued that the new film, which is coming out on Friday, September 6, is focused on different generations.
«Such a sequel, it really is connected to time», - — emphasized Tim. «It was my hook, three generations — mother, daughter, granddaughter. And that was the core. I couldn’t have done it personally in 1989 or any other time».

Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara return to their original roles Lydia Deetz and Delia Deetz respectively in the new film. Jenna Ortega is featured as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid Deetz. Michael Keaton also returns as Beetlejuice.
In the 1988 film, Geena, 68, and Alec, 66, played the ghosts Barbara and Adam Maitland. At the end of «Beetlejuice», - they agreed to peacefully coexist with the Deetzes in the same house.
Fans of the original comedy were hoping for a cameo from Alec and Geena, but the actress from «League of Their Own» confirmed that she was not asked to play Barbara Maitland again. In April, Geena told Entertainment Tonight her «theory» about why the Maitlands did not appear in the sequel.
«No, I’m not in it. I’m not in the remake», - — she noted. «Oh, were you expecting me to be in it? No, you know, because my theory is that ghosts don’t age. Not that I’m aging».
Geena also noted that she and Alec’s characters «are stuck in the form they looked when they died, forever, so it’s been quite some time».
Although she is not in the upcoming film, Geena mentioned in her interview that she plans to watch the trailer.
