Belle Gibson: a story of lies and deception on Netflix: truth or ficti
The Netflix series «The Story, Based on a Lie» tells the story of Australian influencer Belle Gibson, who deceived followers on social media in the early 2010s by faking brain cancer and falsely claiming to have been cured by a special diet she accidentally sold.

Gibson continued to build a fitness and diet empire through her Instagram account @healing_belle, launching an app and a book called «Whole Kitchen». However, in 2015, journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano exposed her lies, eventually publishing a book about the scandal in 2017. They were the first to reveal Gibson’s financial lies about donating profits from her business to several charities. It was soon discovered that she also lied about her age and completely fabricated her cancer diagnosis — or rather, her multiple cancer diagnoses.

It seems that Gibson, now 33, is still somewhere in Australia, keeping a low profile. In 2017, Gibson was fined over $ 400,000, according to PEOPLE.

In 2024, the media outlet A Current Affair spotted Gibson at a gas station, apparently somewhere in Australia. The media reported that she still had not paid her $ 400,000 fine.

Gibson is not married, but she was rumored to be in a relationship with Clive Rothwell, who is mentioned in the show. While many real people in the show had altered names, Rothwell’s name remained the same.

It is unclear whether they have broken up or when, but at a court hearing in 2019, Gibson referred to Rothwell as her neighbor and friend, according to The Guardian.

In the show, Gibson is in a long-term relationship with Rothwell and has a young son from a previous marriage.

In real life, Gibson has a son, according to The Woman Who Fooled the World.

You can watch the mini-series on Netflix, with the first episode released on February 6, 2025. It consists of six episodes, each approximately one hour long.
