Ben Affleck, Kerry Washington, and Steven Yeun discussed their new crime thriller «Animals» in an interview with Extra. In the film, Affleck plays Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball, whose son becomes a victim of a kidnapping for ransom. Kimball and his wife (Washington) desperately try to get their son back, but this could destroy their lives.
Affleck noted that the film’s plot begins with the question of what parents are willing to do for their children. He added that the film raises more complex questions about how far this devotion can go and what it means to be a family. Affleck emphasized that the story becomes tangled and does not have simple answers, touching on themes of marriage and politics.
Washington spoke about working with Affleck, who also directed the film. She mentioned that the opportunity to work with him as a director was very appealing to her. Kerry added that Affleck did an excellent job in his role and that they had fun working together in the ensemble.
Affleck praised Washington, calling her an «impressive woman», - and noted that he needed actors who not only performed well but also helped develop the script. He also shared that the project «Animals» was initially connected to his best friend Matt Damon and ex-wife Jennifer Garner, but they decided not to continue working on it after learning that Denzel Washington and Spike Lee were working on a similar film.
Nevertheless, elements of «Animals» stayed with Affleck, and he returned to the project, assembling a team of co-writers to create a «completely different» film. «Animals» will be released on Netflix on October 9.
