Arizona congressional candidate Bernadette Green-Plasencia stated that she was a victim of rape in August while repairing broken campaign signs. In an interview with Phoenix New Times, she recounted that the incident occurred on August 14 around 2 a.m. as she was walking through a parking lot to fix a sign.
According to her, she was struck in the head and lost consciousness. When she came to, she found that a stranger was sexually assaulting her. At that moment, another man appeared, who, she claims, tried to hold her legs apart. Green-Plasencia recalled that she responded by kicking him, to which he said, «Don't do that».
After the attack, the men left the parking lot, leaving Green-Plasencia on the ground with several bruises. She reported the incident to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department, indicating that it took place in Sun City. Although she initially wanted to forget about it and felt embarrassed, she decided to reach out to the authorities.
The sheriff’s report notes that Green-Plasencia was unable to provide a clear description of her attackers, but they were presumed to be white, with one wearing black shoes. She mentioned that she only remembers «little flashes» of the events and is trying to recall more.
A representative for Green-Plasencia's campaign stated that it was very difficult for her to speak publicly about what happened. She decided to share her story to help other survivors who suffer in silence. Green-Plasencia is running against Republican Abe Hamadeh, who represents Arizona’s 8th district.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department is continuing its investigation into the incident but declined to comment on the situation.
