The Weeknd has long spoken out about boycotting the Grammys. In 2021, he promised not to submit his work to the Grammys anymore. He stated: «The trust has been broken for a long time between the Grammy organization and artists, so it would be unwise to raise a victory flag. I think the industry and society need to see the transparent system for victory to be celebrated, but it’s an important step. I’m not interested in being a part of the Grammys, especially with their history of corruption over all these decades. I will not be submitting in the future», - according to Variety.
Grammy chief Harvey Mason Jr. mentioned the boycott before introducing the artist’s return to the Grammys on Sunday, February 2, 2025. Harvey detailed all the changes that were made to the voting at the show, leading to statements from many artists, such as The Weeknd, over the years.
Harvey openly stated on stage: «I heard him. I felt his conviction. We all want an organization dedicated to the well-being of all musicians, and one that reflects the entire music community now and for future generations. So over the past few years we’ve listened, we’ve acted, and we’ve changed. There’s more work to be done, but I firmly believe we are on the right path», - as reported by People.
The changes are evident in the numbers. Over 13,000 new voting members were added, and there is also diversity among participants. There was a 65% increase in voters who are people of color, and a 27% increase in voters who are women, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter
