According to multiple reports, Billy will not be returning for the fourth season, although the finale of the third season only hints at Vince’s death. Speaking to Deadline before the finale of the third season in April 2025, executive producer and showrunner Tia Napolitano explained why they decided to remove the main character — without naming Billy during the interview.
«It's reality, there’s danger in this job, so we wanted to honor that and really raise the stakes», - Tia told the publication. «Again, coming from a show like 'Grey's Anatomy' for many years, that’s how character-driven dramas work. You want the opportunity for that door to open, for someone to walk out of it, or for someone to walk into it. We really delve into that aspect of the show, as well as honor authenticity».
When asked about the decision to remove Billy’s character from the show, Tia noted: «We won’t confirm who we’re losing. It will definitely be a devastating loss for everyone who remains in our family. No, when filming the finale, none of the actors knew».
Executive producer Joan Reiter also told the publication that when it comes to character deaths, «it all comes down to what’s best from a creative standpoint».
«And then we just have to go with our gut about what makes the most compelling story, and we really try to write authentic stories that explore what these heroes are facing and going through», - Joan continued. «So that’s always where we start from».
