Billy Crystal was honored at PaleyFest NY 2026 on Monday evening. In an interview with Mona Kosar Abdi, he spoke about his fifty-year career and expressed pride in continuing to work and enjoy what he does.
Crystal shared information about his new autobiographical one-man play on Broadway titled «860», - which is dedicated to the loss of his family home due to a fire in Palisades. He noted that audiences are enjoying the show and he looks forward to each new night of performance. According to him, «there's a lot of work to be done, and a lot of goals I want to achieve».
Although «860» arose from a heavy loss, Billy was able to find laughter and joy in it. He shared that he has always written since his youth, and it is important for him to turn «all that awfulness into something beautiful» that can help people cope with their own losses. Crystal expressed condolences to the victims of the hurricane in Florida and others affected by natural disasters this year.
He emphasized that the play is dedicated to all those who have lost their past, present, and everything they hold dear. Crystal added that theater has become one of the saving graces of his career, containing both joy and pain, which he believes is the essence of life.
When asked how writing helped him cope with the loss of close friends, Billy said, «There's no trick. You just have to be honest with it».
