Billie Lourd shared memories of how her late grandmother Debbie Reynolds dealt with one of Hollywood’s most famous scandals — the affair of her then-husband Eddie Fisher with Elizabeth Taylor. In an interview with The Times published on September 19, Lourd revealed that Reynolds did not shy away from discussing the situation.
«This was one of my grandmother’s favorite bedtime stories», - Lourd noted. She recalled Reynolds saying, «You know, dear, we had a house in Palm Springs. But then there was the divorce from Eddie…»
Reynolds and Fisher, who were married from 1955 to 1959, were considered Hollywood’s golden couple and raised two children: daughter Carrie Fisher (Lourd's late mother) and son Todd Fisher. At the time, Reynolds and Fisher were close friends with another famous couple — actress Taylor and her husband, producer Mike Todd. After Todd’s death in a plane crash in March 1958, Fisher began an affair with Taylor, which led to the breakdown of his marriage to Reynolds and became one of the biggest scandals in Hollywood.
When one of the society columnists of the time, Hedda Hopper, asked Taylor about the affair, she reportedly replied, «What do you want me to do, sleep alone?»
In 1988, Reynolds, reflecting on her marriage and the widely discussed infidelity, told ET that at that time she and Fisher were happy in their marriage. «But, obviously, I was wrong about that, you know? That was my point of view. I was happy, I was in love, but obviously, he wasn’t», - she remarked.
Reynolds also recalled how many of her acquaintances seemed to know about the affair before she did. «We were all best friends, so there was nothing wrong with that. But then I came to a party, and everyone was whispering, like, 'She knows…' And I wanted to know what they were whispering about, but no one wanted to tell me, so I figured it was about me», - she shared.
Reynolds and Fisher ultimately divorced on May 12, 1959, and Fisher and Taylor married on the same day, just three hours after the divorce was finalized. Taylor and Fisher divorced in March 1964.
In her interview with The Times, Lourd also expressed her gratitude for her late grandmother and mother, who passed away a day apart in 2016 at the ages of 84 and 60, respectively. «They truly were two of the most talented women of all time, and I feel so lucky to live under their shining 'umbrellas'», - she said. «For a while, I tried to hide from that, but now I say it loud and proud — I am the daughter of Carrie Fisher and the granddaughter of Debbie Reynolds, and I feel very lucky to be able to say that».
