The life and career of John Madden will be showcased on the big screen in the upcoming sports biographical film Madden from Amazon. Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage will play the late NFL coach, and his fellow respected actor Christian Bale will portray the late NFL executive director Al Davis.
«The film tells the remarkable journey of Madden — from his partnership with Al Davis and the 'Raiders', who won the Super Bowl, to the creation of Madden NFL and becoming one of the most significant voices in football history», - explained Amazon MGM Studios in a release.
The studio also presented a first look at the film, where Nicolas and Christian showcase their characters and display Super Bowl rings in front of the camera.

John was a coach and commentator for the NFL. He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978. He became known when he led the team to their first Super Bowl title.
After his death in December 2021 at the age of 85, John was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. By 2024, John still held the record for most wins — 103, to be exact — in Raiders history.
John left behind two sons, Joseph and Michael, whom he shared with his wife Virginia.
In addition to Nicolas and Christian, Madden’s main cast also includes John Malani as entrepreneur Trip Hawkins, Kathryn Hahn as Virginia Madden, and Sienna Miller as sports franchise owner Carol Davis.
It was previously reported that Will Ferrell would play John, then it was reported that Hugh Jackman was in talks for the role. Tom Hanks was also rumored to be in talks for the role of Al, but ultimately the roles were assigned to Nicolas and Christian.
Respected director David O. Russell is directing Madden. He co-wrote the screenplay with Cameron Clarke. David has previously directed several successful films, including «Silver Linings Playbook» and «American Hustle».
At the time of publication, Madden does not have an official release date, although principal photography for the production began in April 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. Sports fans can expect the film to be released sometime in 2026, depending on when production wraps up
