Laura Dern is one of the most celebrated actresses of all time. In addition to uncredited roles in the early 1970s, she began regularly appearing in films in 1980 and has starred in a wide range of critically acclaimed films and popular blockbusters, particularly in early hits such as «Blue Velvet» in 1986 and «Jurassic Park» in 1993. Although Laura has been a beloved star for decades, she actually has many relatives who have worked in various fields of the entertainment industry. Her parents, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, both worked as actors, and she also has relatives who have been involved in politics, were very successful businessmen, and writers. All three actors have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, located next to each other.

Laura, who is a mother of two children herself, spoke about how happy she was that both her parents were artists in a 2014 interview with The Guardian. «My parents, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern, are so real; they are who they are. The 70s, when I was a child, were their time of great success. But there were no cameras following you at the market or paparazzi at school», - she said. «They wanted to play complex people and didn’t care about anything else, like glamour».

Unfortunately, Diane passed away on November 3, 2025. Learn more about Laura’s parents here.

Laura’s father was married before he met Diane. Bruce was briefly married to Marie Dawn Pierce from 1957 to 1959 before marrying Diane in 1960. Their first daughter died at the age of 18 months. By the time Laura was born in 1967, he was an established actor, with roles in various TV shows, such as Stoney Burke, where he appeared in 17 episodes. He also appeared in several films, including Wild River and Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte.

Since the 1960s, Bruce has appeared in a wide range of films, where he was critically acclaimed, including the 1974 «The Great Gatsby», - for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. His performances in the 1978 «Coming Home» and the 2013 «Nebraska» earned him nominations for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar. Bruce and Diane divorced in 1969 and remarried in the same year to Andrea Beckett!

Laura opened up about how she grew closer to her father as she got older. She said that when she was younger, she felt that her father was a bit unsure as a parent in a 2013 interview with Marc Maron on the WTF podcast. «I think he, as you can imagine, didn’t quite know what to do with a little person», - she explained. She also joked about how a friend’s father at a game once approached her because of a character her father played, who killed John Wayne, in a 2013 interview with Vulture.

Despite the awkward encounters, she shared what she learned from her father in that interview. «Stay true to what’s right for you. Stay true to your own voice and don’t worry about being loved or what others think. Look at your own paper», - she said about what she internalized as an actress.

Like Bruce, Diane also established herself as an actress with various roles in films and TV shows in the late 1950s and 60s before Laura was born. For many years, Diane appeared in many hit films, such as «Chinatown» (1974) and «National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation» (1989), and she received Oscar nominations for roles in «Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore» (1974), «Wild at Heart» (1990), and «Rambling Rose» (1991).

Although Diane openly spoke about initially discouraging Laura from a career in acting, Laura’s first two uncredited roles were in her mother’s films «Alice» and «White Lightning» in 1973. Despite spending a lot of time with her father in her childhood, the actress explained that her mother was the primary caregiver in an interview with WTF. «I was definitely raised by my mom and my grandmother», - she said. After Diane and Bruce parted ways, she married William Shea from 1969 to 1976 and Robert Hunter in 1999.
