Bob Odenkirk is mourning his «Breaking Bad» co-star R.J. Mitte, who passed away this week. Mitte’s representative confirmed to People that the 34-year-old actor died by suicide on Monday.
In his statement, Odenkirk noted that R.J. was «a good person who shared his personal story and his time to help others». He added, «Every time I saw him, he greeted the world with positivity and a strong desire to connect. It’s just deeply sad».
R.J. Mitte, who suffered from cerebral palsy, was an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities and worked as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. Another «Breaking Bad» actor, Luis Moncada, recently spoke about the time spent with R.J. in New Mexico just days before his death. He posted a video on Instagram of them riding in a hot air balloon and later told TMZ that R.J. looked «very tired and sad».
Moncada did not disclose what was troubling R.J., noting that it was «too personal». He added that the day before his death, he drove Mitte to the airport, and they had a long conversation. Emotionally, Luis said, «I made him promise to call me if he needed to talk… and I never got that call».
Bryan Cranston, who played R.J.'s father on the show, is also grieving the loss. He wrote on Instagram, «I am in deep despair as I write this tonight. R.J. Mitte, my dear son in 'Breaking Bad,' has died». Cranston praised R.J. for becoming «a truly great actor» and for his active work as an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities.
Cranston added that they had just been planning to meet for lunch in the coming weeks. «We were texting just a few weeks ago — figuring out when we could get together», - he wrote. In closing, Bryan urged anyone who is thinking about suicide to seek support by calling the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, adding, «There is hope».
