Legal battle: Trump and Carroll continue to dispute defamation
6 september 2024 в 22:37
Former President Donald Trump and writer E. Jean Carroll have been in a legal battle since November 2019, when Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump after his public denials of her allegations of sexual assault.
Trump then appealed the 2023 civil court decision that found him guilty of sexual assault against Carroll a decade ago in a department store and defamation of her in 2022, calling her allegations «fraudulent». In a separate case, a jury in January awarded Carroll $ 83.3 million for Trump’s defamatory statements made in 2019, a decision he also appealed.
The legal battle continued as Trump’s lawyer, John Sauer, urged the appeals court to overturn the decision to award Carroll $ 5 million. Trump, 78, claimed he never assaulted Carroll, 80.
On September 6, Trump appeared in a New York court for hearings, his first appearance after missing court proceedings and later blaming his lawyers for the defeat.
