Regardless of how funny it may seem on live television from New York, Saturday Night Live is a completely different story behind the scenes. During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, SNL cast member Bowen Yang revealed details about a former male host who, according to him, allegedly made «team members cry» before reading the script. However, 33-year-old Bowen did not name the host in question.
«This person… this host made several team members cry on Wednesday before the script reading because he didn’t like the ideas», - he said during a conversation with Andy Cohen. Bowen added that it was «horrible».
Elsewhere during his television interview, Bowen described his biggest script failure on SNL. He recalled one that was planned for host Ayọ̀ Edebiri.
«We wrote a live sketch where everything was happening in an elevator, and we were supposed to kiss or something because the elevator was stuck», - Bowen explained. «Then for some reason, it got turned into a pre-tape right under our noses, and we had to adjust to that».
The actor from the musical «Evil» added that the scene «just didn’t go as he had hoped».
«And you just deal with it», - he emphasized. «Comedy is subjective, you never know how it will play with a certain audience. But that’s okay, you just let it go».
Bowen was hired as a writer for SNL in 2018. A year later, he was promoted to actor status for the 45th season. Among his most famous live sketches were with Colin Jost and Michael Che in the «Weekend Update» segment of the show. Bowen became the first actor to receive an Emmy nomination in 2021. Since then, he has been nominated four more times for «Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series», - including at the upcoming Emmy Awards ceremony this year.
SNL is currently preparing for its 50th season, which will premiere on September 28th. Known for its political satire, it is expected that Maya Rudolph will return to her role as Vice President Kamala Harris during her election campaign
