Charles Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, made a striking statement about his conversation with King Charles on the day of his sister’s death. In an interview with People magazine, he revealed that the king sounded «cheerful» during their phone call, despite the tragic news of Diana’s passing.
Spencer noted that when he learned of his sister’s death, he was bewildered, and he was surprised that Charles, as he put it, seemed «cheerful». He suggested that the king might have felt liberated from any obligations, which could be related to his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles. Spencer also emphasized that his aim was to present the facts, not to express anger or resentment.
In discussing Diana’s funeral, Spencer recalled how the king asked him if he would mind if Princes William and Harry walked behind their mother’s coffin. Spencer replied that it would not be in Diana’s spirit, to which Charles reminded him of his own experience walking behind his uncle’s coffin. Spencer countered that in that case, it was not about a mother, and ultimately the conversation became tense. He also recounted that the king said, «We will soon forget her», - which left a strong impression on him, and he ended the conversation.
King Charles had previously commented on similar excerpts from Spencer’s book, stating that grief can cloud the mind and affect memory. Spencer, in turn, expressed dissatisfaction with the king’s response, calling it «patronizing» and «insincere».
