Menendez Brothers: where are they now and how much have they earned?

Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez came under public scrutiny almost 30 years ago. After the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989, the brothers were eventually convicted in 1996 of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The prosecution consistently claimed that Lyle and Erik killed their parents for inheritance money, but the brothers still insist that they committed the crime after being subjected to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse by Jose and Kitty. Now, with the series «Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story» drawing even more attention to the brothers' case, many want to know more about Lyle and Erik, such as where they are now and what their net worth is today.
According to The Los Angeles Times, the approximate value of Jose and Kitty Menendez’s estate at the time of their death was $ 14.5 million. Jose held a prestigious position at RCA before taking a position at the independent film studio Carolco Pictures. The studio was owned by International Video Entertainment (IVE).
By 1994, approximately $ 10 million of the Menendez estate had been spent. Most of the money went to Lyle and Erik’s defense team, including attorney Leslie Abramson. According to the publication, the Menendez estate in Beverly Hills was sold in 1991 for $ 3.6 million, and their home in Calabasas, California, was sold in 1994 for less than $ 2 million.
As of today, the net worth of the Menendez brothers is unknown.
According to California’s «Slayer's Rule», - anyone who «feloniously and intentionally kills» a person who would have inherited from the victim, «shall not» be entitled to inherit «any property, interest, or benefit by devise from the decedent or by trust from the decedent or in which the decedent has an interest, including any general or special power of appointment granted by the will or trust to the slayer, as well as any appointment of the slayer as executor, trustee, or guardian made by the will or trust».
Both brothers were sent to different prisons and had not seen each other for over 20 years. In 2018, Lyle was transferred to Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California, where Erik was already located. In the same year, the brothers were placed in the same cell at RJD.
In October 2024, Los Angeles prosecutor George Gascón announced at a press conference that a new court hearing had been scheduled for Lyle and Erik on November 29, 2024. The prosecutor noted that evidence had been provided that would be reviewed.
«We have been provided with a copy of a letter that was allegedly sent by one of the brothers to another family member, where he talks about being a victim of abuse», - George said. «We also have evidence provided by their defense attorneys that one of the Menudo group members claimed to have been abused by the father».
George noted that the court has a «moral and ethical obligation to consider what is presented to us and make a decision based on the review of the review side, whether they deserve a review — although they were clearly murderers — because they have been in prison for many years and have paid their debt to society».
The upcoming court hearing opens the possibility of either a new sentence or a retrial for Lyle and Erik.
